The simulator is a powerful tool that allows developers to test/debug CloudStack without using any real hypervisors. Apart from the positive scenarios, it simplifies testing the negative scenarios by injecting faults and delays based on some recent enhancements. New scenarios like user VM high-availability, retry logic during VM deployment etc. can now be tested using the simulator resulting in better code coverage and thereby improving the overall quality of the product.

Paul will take delegates through how ShapeBlue use the nested virtualisation feature of CloudStack/vSphere in order to create fully functional virtualised multi-hypervisor CloudStack environments which are used as test/dev environments and also to host ShapeBlue’s commercial training offerings. Paul will explain the networking and compute issues which have been overcome to enable this functionality.

Automate tests of CloudStack installation and configurations with cloudstack_spec, serverspec like Rspec library. Rspec provide a nice unit test frame work for Ruby with nice output, serverspec provide tests library to test infrastructure as code. This Proof of concept provide another toolset for upgrade tests or troubleshooting.

Integration testing can be an intimidating task to tackle. Where do you start? What is Marvin? What is Jenkins and how does it apply to my testing efforts? How can I leverage a virtual infrastructure to minimize the number of physical hosts that are required?

I discuss the approach I took to leveraging these tools and building an automated regression test suite for a collection of ever-growing features.

Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) is a technology designed to make DevOps easier and allow developers to focus on application development. The PaaS takes care of provisioning, scaling, HA, and other cloud management aspects. Apache Stratos is a PaaS codebase develop in Apache and designed to create a highly productive developer environment while also supporting powerful deployment options.

In this session Lakmal will discuss the key elements of PaaS and dig deep into Apache Stratos. This will include installation top of CloudStack, deploying sample applications using puppet, showing how it can be extended to support new application containers. The session will include a demonstration of app deployment, provisioning, auto-scaling and more.

This presentation will demonstrate the latest feature of the SlipStream open source multi-cloud PaaS solution: auto-scale. SlipStream has been able to deploy immutable complex applications over multi-cloud infrastructures for a while now. We are now able to create mutable deployments, where users can up and down the number of VMs based on KPI and pre-defined thresholds.

This opens the way to many new deployment scenarios, including peak demand adaptation, high-avalability enforcement and many more. In this presentation, we demonstrate the creation of a mutable deployment, with auto-scale capabilities. We also share best practices in terms of architecture to ensure smooth operation in scaling mode.

This presentation shows that CloudStack can be used as a flexible cloud solution in a multi-cloud and even federated scenario.

TOSCA (Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications) is an emerging standard for modeling complete application stacks and automating their deployment and management. In this session we’ll discuss what TOSCA is all about, why it makes sense in the context of CloudStack, and how we can take it farther up the stack to handle complete applications, both during and after deployment, on top of CloudStack.

Often praised for cloudbursting, failovers and disaster recovery, hybrid-cloud sounds ideal on paper: if one of your clouds is unavailable or over capacity, transfer the load to another one!
But it is critical to understand that hybrid cloud is not the panacea to your availability and capacity problems. In fact, hybrid cloud is only a tool to address those problems; one that should be wielded carefully, as there are more wrong ways to deploy across hybrid cloud infrastructure than there are right ways.

In practice, which use cases are well-suited for hybrid cloud?
Is it truly economical to “own the base and rent the spike”?
What are the challenges an organization should expect to face when deploying hybrid cloud infrastructure?
Are availability and capacity the only benefits of hybrid cloud?
